Date: June 21st, 1914 - July 12th, 2009

Axel Harry Pedersen was born on June 21,1914, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Bertel and Annine (Westergaard) Pedersen, who had immigrated from Vrenstad, Denmark, in 1907. In 1920, the family moved to the Drake farm in Marsh Township southeast ofValley City, North Dakota.
As a young man during the Great Depression, Axel worked at whatever jobs he could find, doing mostly farm labor. In 1939, he went to Spokane, Washington, and worked in a paper mill. On March 20,1942, he entered the United States Navy. He served as a Gunner's Mate in the Armed Guard on a merchant marine ship that transported ammunition to our troops in the South Pacific. On September 16,1945, he received an honorable discharge.
On February 3,1943, he married Auslaug Thoreson from rural Fingal, North Dakota, in Long Beach, California. In 1946, they moved to the Percy Stewart farm west of Grandin, North Dakota and began farming. In 1954, Auslaug was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a muscle-weakening disease that made her an invalid. Until her death in January of 1983, Axel was her primary caregiver. On December 26,1983, Axel married Clara (Rood) Pederson in Valley City. He retired from farming in 1985, and theylater moved to Valley City. Axel and Clara enjoyed traveling. They spent many winters in Arizona and later in Texas, near Clara's daughter, Susan, and her family. One summer they drove their pickup and camper to Alaska.
Axel was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Grandin and of Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City. He served on the Bohnsack Township Board, the Bohnsack School Board, and the Grace Lutheran Church council. He was a member of the Barnes County Museum and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. An avid gardener and planter of trees, he enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors, and relatives, and he especially liked having children around. The coffee pot was always on and he was usually ready for agame of cards. In September of 2006, he became a resident of the Aneta Parkview Health Center, Aneta, North Dakota.

Tscherning Filholm was born in Vrensted, Denmark in 1879. He was the oldest of ten children and was christened, Christian Fredrick Tscherning Andersen, the family name which was later changed to Filholm, the name of the farm on which they lived.

His father, Andrew Paul (Andersen)Filholm, had spend 1 1/2 year in America and wanted badly to bring his family, but his mother (wife), Christina, did`t feel she could move such a big family so far. Andrew urged Tscherning to come to the land ofopportunity. After Tscherning had served in the King`s Guards, where he met and married Marie Hansen, who worked in the Royal Household, he came to America, arriving in Busnel, S.D. on June 6,1904.

He was told that on his arrivel in Busnel he should look west to see a big wooden windmill. That windmill was on the Jens Hortness farm and that was where a job was waiting for him. He walked the four miles to the farm.

In september of that same year his wife joined him, bringing with her their two daughters, Gudrun, age two and Sonja, age 4 1/2 months. His wife went to work for Jens Hortness`s son, Nels, who had just lost his wife leaving him with an infant son, Alfred.

26 Dorothy P. (Pedersen) Torgerson
(January 18, 1933-March 6, 2009) Dorothy Patricia Torgerson of Clarkfield, MN born on January 18, 1933, went to our Savior on Friday, March 6, 2009 at her home after a courageous battle against ALS.
Dorothy grew up on a farm near Valley City, ND. She was the oldest of 8 siblings. She attended Green Country School before graduating from Valley City College High in 1952.
Having her fill of caring for 7 other siblings she quickly moved to Fargo, ND. A few years later Dorothy moved to Colorado in 1957 where she gave her life to the Lord. She then returned to ND to acquire a two year teaching degree at Valley City State Teachers College in 1963. After which she moved to Columbia Falls, MT where she taught 3rd grade for three years before returning to college to complete her 4 year degree. She then taught in Granite Falls Elementary from the fall of 1967 to1970 during which time she met and married Curtis Torgerson of Clarkfield on July 19, 1969.
They had two children: Mark bom in 1970 and Michelle in 1974. In 1975 Dorothy began teaching again as a Title 1 Teacher at H.A. Hagg Elementary in Clarkfield until she officially retired in 1999 after 27 years of service to Yellow Medicine East District.
Dorothy loved to sew and after retirement, quilting quickly became a passion of hers. However, her personal hobbies always took a back seat to the needs of others. She volunteered at Special Touch summer camp near Foston, MN for challenged children for many years, went on a mission trip to Belize, sponsored 4 different children in third world countries, taught Sunday School for many years, served on the board at the Valhalla Apartments and always reached out to those needing a hand.
For those not needing a helping hand, there was always a hot cup of coffee upon your arrival and if you were fortunate, a delicious treat from the kitchen.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Curtis, children: Mark and Michelle (husband William), mother Synova, brothers: Gerald, Earl, Bertel, David and sisters: Carol, Pamella and Diane, god children: Lynn Pedersen and Kirsten (Pedersen) Gulden. Her father, Paul Pedersen (2002) and mother Ruth Falstad (1939) preceded Dorothy.
